ÿþ<HTML><TITLE>Hiroshima - January 19, 2006</title> <BODY><CENTER> A look at <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiroshima">Hiroshima</a>, especially the memorials associated with the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_bombings_of_Hiroshima_and_Nagasaki">atomic bombing</a>. Not the happiest of sightseeing outings.<P> <a href="http://www.feitclub.com/images/hiro01.jpg"><img src="http://www.feitclub.com/images/hiro01.jpg" width=648 height=486 border=0></a><BR> Hiroshima still uses street cars. For some reason I found this much more unusual than my dad did.<P> <a href="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 001.jpg"><img src="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 001.jpg" width=486 height=648 border=0></a><P> <a href="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 002.jpg"><img src="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 002.jpg" width=648 height=486 border=0></a><P> <a href="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 003.jpg"><img src="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 003.jpg" width=486 height=648 border=0></a><P> <a href="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 005.jpg"><img src="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 005.jpg" width=648 height=486 border=0></a><BR> The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiroshima_Peace_Memorial">Genbaku Dome</a> from various angles and positions. The structure held up reasonably well considering the close proximity<BR>of the nuclear explosion but everyone inside the building was killed.<P> <a href="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 004.jpg"><img src="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 004.jpg" width=486 height=648 border=0></a><BR> A memorial to the "mobilized children" of Hiroshima. Thousands of young adults were sent to off to the war instead of finishing school,<BR>many of whom never came home.<P> <a href="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 006.jpg"><img src="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 006.jpg" width=648 height=486 border=0></a><BR> This is dedicated to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sadako_Sasaki">Sadako Sasaki</a> who survived the initial bombing but later died from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leukemia">leukemia</a> because of the radiation.<P> <a href="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 007.jpg"><img src="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 007.jpg" width=648 height=486 border=0></a><BR> A burial mound of anonymous victims, unable to be identified.<P> <a href="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 008.jpg"><img src="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 008.jpg" width=486 height=648 border=0></a><BR> The "Peace Bell." Visitors are encouraged to ring it and hope for world peace. I did (and I do).<P> <a href="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 009.jpg"><img src="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 009.jpg" width=486 height=648 border=0></a><BR> A memorial to the estimated 20,000 Korean victims of the bomb. Many Koreans had come to Hiroshima during the Japanese occupation.<P> <a href="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 010.jpg"><img src="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 010.jpg" width=648 height=486 border=0></a><BR> A <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cenotaph">cenotaph</a> for the victims. An eternal flame is burning in the distance although it didn't come out well in the picture.<P> <a href="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 011.jpg"><img src="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 011.jpg" width=648 height=486 border=0></a><BR> Inside the Peace Museum, this watch is stopped at 8:15 when the explosion occured.<P> <a href="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 012.jpg"><img src="http://www.feitclub.com/images/abomb 012.jpg" width=648 height=486 border=0></a><BR> This model represents the city about one second after the bomb detonated in the air. That ball is the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_fission">nuclear fission</a> explosion which was like a small sun.<BR>As you can see, the city was instantly devastated.<P> <a href="http://www.feitclub.com/images/hiro02.jpg"><img src="http://www.feitclub.com/images/hiro02.jpg" width=648 height=486 border=0></a><BR> On the lighter side, the entrance to "Okonomi-mura," a building with a high concentration of <I>okonomiyaki</i> restaurants.
