Now What?

It seems I have been "zinged," in a manner of speaking.

One of the perils of the Internet is inherently intertwined with its main appeal: the fact that everyone can use it and do what they want with it. I use it to record my ideas and exert the tiniest bit of creativity for the amusement of others. It seems that someone else has decided to use it to amuse others by poking fun at yours truly. An excerpt from one of my video logs has been mocked, MST3K-style, and to add insult to the insult, my face happens to be featured in the thumbnail:

What do I do? At first I was kinda pissed, but if you watch the clip it's very tame. Indeed, the point of my discussion was how to deal with people making fun of me, so there's a certain irony in that particular clip being held aloft and made fun of. There's no reason to respond, is there? Should I set my videos to "private" to avoid future scorn? Or should I try to convince myself that it's a good thing that somewhere, my video is entertaining people in an unexpected fashion?

Bit of Good News

If only good news made me relax!

I finally heard from the folks over at the JET Programme and they have decided to grant me an interview! A second mailing will give me a specific appointment, but the initial confirmation message established that the interviews should not interfere with my vacation plans, although things could be cut a little close. The last day for interviews is also the day I leave for Florida, but I've got an evening flight so the odds are overwhelmingly in favor of avoiding any conflicts.

I should buy a suit for this. I haven't owned a suit in years and my jacket is a hangover from my heavier days. That, and I need to prepare myself to interview for the biggest job I've ever held!

It Must Be Said

Congratulations are in order!

The Academy Awards nominations were announced early this morning and by far the best news is that this year's nominees affect me personally. While my interest and respect for the Academy has waned considerably in recent years, there's no doubt that a nomination means a lot in that business. So I must use my little platform here to congratulate my good friend Mike because Jesus Camp has been nominated for Best Documentary. You may remember that I was lucky enough to attend a "premiere party" back in September.

While its chances for winning are slim given the high-profile status of An Inconvenient Truth (because these awards are based on publicity rather than merit), the very fact that he worked on a film that earned an Oscar nomination means a lot. He didn't direct it, no, but his music was an integral part of the film. If you haven't see it, you can rent it.

As far as the other nominees are concerned, well, the less said the better. I was pleasantly surprised to see Letters from Iwo Jima get some attention, although the odds are against it actually winning something which is frustrating because it was much more interesting than the other nominees (at least, the ones I have seen). And if they don't give Martin Scorcese an award this year then they must hold a grudge against him personally. Not because The Departed was such a great movie, but because he got passed up so many times before and the Oscars have a habit of rewarding people later on down the road. Likewise, they should give Eddie Murphy an award already because film comedians are under-appreciated as a rule.

Either way, I don't plan on watching the ceremony. But I'll have my fingers crossed for you, Mike!
