Bye-Bye Birthday

Tomorrow I return to Albany, so today was my farewell to New York City. It was also my Dad's birthday!

I went downtown to Alphabet City to buy something for Dad as well as pick up a special lunch at Minca Ramen. I know we all like to think of ramen as cheap-to-the-point-of-gross college food, but there's little similarity between "instant" ramen and the big bowlful you can buy on any street corner in Japan. Here in the U.S. there's a lot more of the former than the latter so I made a point to enjoy a nice hot dish here in New York while I had the chance. I actually arrived a half-hour before they opened so I had little choice but to walk around the neighborhood to kill time, hence the random photograph above.

Look at that heaping serving of soup and noodles! Would you believe there's peanut butter in that miso broth? I didn't taste it but that's what it said on the menu. Very smooth. Aah, I wish I could eat it all over again right now and I'm positively stuffed from dinner (more on that later). Anyway, my hunger satiated, I went back to Max Brenner's (the source of the chocolate pizza) and picked up a pair of treats for Dad, but much to my chagrin they don't do éclairs. I thought that was a given for chocolatiers! Thinking quickly, I went back uptown and tried a local bakery that I know my dad is fond of and sure enough, they had plenty.

The cake is from Max Brenner's, the éclair from just around the corner. The box of chocolates was Mako's present which arrived on Sunday. Not pictured: Max's chocolate croissant.

Dad got a quite a haul this year! To top it all off we had a really nice Mexican dinner where we each had a margarita. I went a little over the top and had a peanut butter mousse smothered in chocolate sauce for dessert, but what the hell? My lifestyle in Albany is pretty barren compared to this city. Up there, Chinese take-out is a treat. Here, it's positively banal. I suppose it's for the best in the long run. Simply put, I don't need food this good, this often...but it makes for good pictures.
