Good Eats
Some days it seems like eating is the only activity I pursue. But I photograph it for you good people!
I had lunch with Hyde today which was pleasant. I had a long overdue bowl of katsu kare while we chatted. We both agreed that we need to finish our incompletes and we both feel confused by the state of popular music these days. After lunch we hit a local bakery for coffee and some sweet cupcakes. At my request, Hyde took my picture.

I didn't do much else afterwards, but please enjoy this look at another one of Mako's gifts to me. Sooner or later I'll give you a video of something other than me eating, I promise.

Odd-Number Bias, I Suppose
Have I ever told you how I find years than end in 7 awkward? It just sounds strange when I said the number out loud.
Saturday was simultaneously relaxing and exhausting. There was a ton of food to eat with one of the appetizers being especially delicious: dates and cheese wrapped in bacon. I had a fair amount to drink as well, but by the time dinner was over my glass was empty. After all the food we moved right into a furious game of Scattegories. This has been a fixture of past parties at Mike's house, and his father can get pretty competitive. Plus, with all the people in the room there was a lot of shouting. Playing that game is an engrossing, high-energy endeavor! Bottom line: Mike, Sarah and I were the winning team.
Sunday was a very quiet day by comparison. I hung out at home until 5:00 when I left to meet Scott. We walked downtown, enjoyed some food and drink at Kenka, then met up with more friends in Chelsea en route to the party. The loft was pretty spacious and over the next few hours it got pretty full. Mako called at midnight which was nice. She later e-mailed me photos of her family's New Year's meal (Japanese folks traditionally spend New Year's Eve at home). Of course, when it was midnight in New York it was lunchtime in Kobe so our conversation wasn't very long. Just enough for each of us to profess our hopes to spend next New Year's together.
After midnight came and went I grew pretty tired in a hurry. Still, I hung in there for a couple hours to socialize. Eventually I headed out to discover steady rainfall. I thought I might grab a cab but, being New Year's Eve, they were all full or off-duty. One cabbie offered me a lift for $20 which is an outrageous mark-up for a intra-Manhattan trip. I ended up just dealing with the rain and walking to the nearest subway station, but not before I saw one driver get out of his car on 9th Ave and start a fight with some pedestrians who were standing in the road trying to hail a limo. The same limo then decided to run a red light while I was crossing in front of it.
I think Mike summed everything up best when, around 12:20AM today, he said that 2006 was probably the "best year" yet for us and our friends. My immediate response was that 2007 looks to be even better.
