Time Flew

...since I was having fun, I suppose. My Florida vacation is over already. Yesterday it actually rained but that released the humidity that had been building over the past few days. Before that rain fell I managed to try my hand at driving a few golf balls for the first time. Sure, I'm a skilled mini-golfer, but I've never tried hitting these things long distance before. I used a seven-iron and a tee and I was able to hit a few past 85 yards. Apparently, that's not bad for a beginner.

Anyway, I'll be leaving for the airport soon and I'll spend the evening in NYC. The weekend, however, has yet to be fully scheduled. I have a feeling I can squeeze a lot of living into these remaining three days of break.

Remove the News-Tube

OK, I didn't want to bring it up because fucking everybody else is talking about it, but I've got to say something about the non-stop press coverage this Terri Schiavo thing is getting. Enough already! There was a goddamn press conference this afternoon between President Bush, President Fox of Mexico and Prime Minister Martin of Canada. Not only was Pres. Bush asked about this nonsense during the Q&A period, but FOX News even cut away before the conference was over to talk about "the latest news" concerning this matter. CNN at least waited until the conference ended before immediately cutting to some guy outside a federal court somewhere.

Am the only one outraged by this misuse of the airwaves? A North American "summit" is more important than the Schiavo matter. Frankly, I can think of hundreds of more important matters, and I'm not including that recent school shooting either. I'm talking about pressing national and international affairs that affect billions of people around the world.

Irregardless of my personal feelings concerning euthanasia or even abortion, this issue should not be a federal matter. It is between Terri's family members and her doctors. Why two-thirds of our government decided to involve themselves is beyond me. Thousands of people are dying every day, many of whom as a result of decisions our government has made. How can they justify bending over backwards to save this one person, possibly against her wishes?

Vacation in Fantasyland

So here I am on Florida's Gulf Coast. This is my fourth visit since my mother and her husband moved down here. I'm slowly getting used to this place but I don't know if I'll ever completely accept it. It seems Collier County is one of the fastest growing areas in the United States, so everything is constantly being expanded and new things are always being built. The "older" parts of town include anything that survived Hurricane Donna in 1960. Every business is either a restaurant or an art gallery. It's like someone designated these cities solely to cater to tourists or wealthy residents, which isn't that crazy because every winter the population doubles as tourists and wealthy residents rush in to avoid shoveling snow. I've seen the difference first hand. My sister and I came down last August and we were amazed to see no crowds in the airport. When I arrived yesterday evening, it looked like a wheelchair convention.

I'm not complaining, mind you. I'm grateful for the opportunity to visit a pleasant climate whenever I want. I checked the weather and it's 39 right now in New York. Here, it's 72. My mom and her husband can play tennis or golf year round while I'm deciding which winter hat to wear.
